One of the reasons we started Fleur Fauna was that we wanted to make a difference. Our pet crematorium was built on love, passion and empathy for those who have lost a beloved companion, and those values will always remain at the heart of everything we do.
We will never lose sight of why we started this journey. We want to stay small, stay personal and continue to offer individual cremations only. For us, growing doesn't mean becoming bigger… it means helping more people understand that they have a choice when saying goodbye to their pet.
You don't have to use the crematorium contracted by your vet. You can choose a service that feels right for you and your companion. Just as importantly, we want everyone to know that their grief is valid, no matter how big or small their pet may have been.
That’s why this week we wanted to talk about how every companion matters, no matter their size
When we think about pets, our minds often go straight to dogs and cats. Understandably so, as they are among the most common companions sharing our homes.
But what about the rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, birds, fish and all the other little animals who become such a big part of our lives?
At Fleur Fauna, we believe their lives matter just as much.
A companion is a companion, whether they have paws, feathers, scales, whiskers or fins. It might be a goldfish, a hamster, a gerbil, a bunny, a budgie or even a chicken (remind me to tell you about our rescue chickens soon!).
Whatever animal has found it’s way into your heart, we are here to help you give them a loving and meaningful final goodbye.
Saying goodbye is one of the last acts of love we can offer our pets. We want to help you make that goodbye as special as possible.
We will travel to you wherever we need to, because we believe every companion deserves the same care, respect and dignity. It doesn't matter whether we're saying goodbye to a tiny budgie or a gentle Great Dane. Each one matters, and each one deserves to be treated with kindness.
A Little About Us and Our Love for Animals
James and I (Natasha, hi!), have shared our lives with many different animals over the years, and each one has left its own little paw print on our hearts.
When I was young, my parents had a fish tank. I still remember the affection I had for one particular fish who used to sit upside down on the coral. His name was Puffy the pufferfish!
Then there was my very first hamster, Rocky. Rocky was a girl! And my first bunny was called Bimbo. I know… luckily, Bimbo never seemed to develop a complex about it!
Today, we have our own little menagerie of animals, and every single one is as special as each other.
For us, a home wouldn't feel quite like home without animals in it. They bring companionship, comfort, character and so much love into our lives. They become part of our routines, our memories and our families in ways that are sometimes difficult to put into words.
That's why we understand that the loss of a small pet can leave an enormous space behind.
We will care for your goldfish, your pet rat or whichever animal companion holds a piece of your heart, wrapping them in the same love, respect and dignity we would give to any of our own.
Why Small Pets Deserve the Same Care
We love meeting people who care so deeply about their animals that they want to give them the very best, whatever their species or size.
Although these conversations often take place during a heartbreaking time, our hearts are warmed by the people we meet. They are people who, just like us, want to do right by those they love and give a much loved member of their family the farewell they deserve.
And the need for this care is far from small.
Figures from a 2024 pet population survey estimated that the UK was home to around one million rabbits, 700,000 guinea pigs and 600,000 hamsters. The Welsh Government's National Survey for Wales for 2021–2022 also highlighted the important place animals hold in our homes. It reported that 53% of households in Wales had at least one pet, including 36% with dogs, 20% with cats, 3% with small furry animals and 2% with birds.
While dogs and cats account for most of the pets in our homes, these figures are a reminder that smaller animals are also an important part of family life.
Behind every statistic is a companion who is loved, cared for and missed when they are gone.
That's why providing a service for all our household companions is so incredibly important to us.
Because a tiny hamster deserves a pet cremation given with ample respect and love.
Our first pet, our first experience of love and loss
For many children, a small pet is their first experience of unconditional love, responsibility and, eventually, loss.
How we respond to that loss matters.
When we acknowledge a child's sadness, allow them to say goodbye and give them the opportunity to remember their little friend, we help them understand that both love and grief deserve respect.
We show them that it is okay to feel sad, that their feelings matter and that the loss of a beloved animal is something they don't have to face alone.
And of course, as we know, it's not just children who form these deep connections.
Our companions give us so much, no matter what type. Sometimes, these animals are there for us during the moments when we need companionship the most. Their presence becomes woven into our everyday lives, and their absence can be felt in countless little ways.
We don't get to decide how important a relationship was based on the species of animal involved.
The size of a pet doesn't determine the size of the bond, and it certainly doesn't determine the depth of the grief when that bond is broken.
Small. Loved. Remembered.
At Fleur Fauna, we don't believe in measuring the importance of a life by its size.
Whether your companion had paws, claws, feathers, whiskers or fins, whether they were with you for a few short months or many wonderful years, they were part of your story.
They may have been small in size, but the love you shared with them was anything but.
We are here to offer a personal, compassionate individual pet cremation service that honours the life you shared, giving you the freedom to choose a farewell that feels right for you and your beloved companion.
Every animal we care for is treated as an individual, with kindness, respect and dignity. Because to us, they are never just a hamster, just a rabbit or just a little bird.
They are somebody's companion. Somebody's comfort. Somebody's family.
And if they mattered to you, they matter to us.
