A Pet's Bucket List - Making the Most of the Time You Have Together
When a pet joins a family, they change the lives of each of those family members forever. There’s something bittersweet in knowing, even at the beginning, that our time together will never feel long enough.
Oh brains, why must you always go there?
For some families there comes a point when age, illness or a diagnosis means they know their goodbye is approaching. Sometimes we still wait for nature - we don’t always know the day. Sometimes this difficult day is pre-arranged and if the responsibility of this has ever landed on you, know we see you, and this immense burden that is not often spoken about.
While no amount of time ever feels enough, having the opportunity to make a few more memories together can be a precious gift.
At Fleur Fauna Pet Crematorium, we meet many families across Carmarthenshire, South Wales and beyond who have had the chance to prepare for saying goodbye. One thing we often hear is how much those final days, weeks or months meant to them.
While you can’t help but focus on what is to come, many pet owners find unique and special ways to celebrate and comfort their pet at the end of their life, a life that has been filled with unconditional love.
But please don’t get us wrong. Grief is not a scale. Knowing before, or having time to prepare, doesn’t make the weight of a loss lighter. Grief is organic and takes the forms, shapes and sizes it wills. This is beyond our control, it is us that grows around grief, we cannot stop it in it’s tracks or ask it to take us less space.
Creating a ‘Bucket List’ That Feels Right for Your Pet
These often aren’t adventurous or filled with grand plans. It doesn't have to involve travelling miles or ticking off endless experiences.
Your pet is happiest in love - they really do know something we don’t, don’t they? Unconditional love and a full tummy really is what makes a blessed life.
Sometimes, the most meaningful moments are the simplest ones.
Perhaps it's one more walk along their favourite beach.
An extra trip to the woods where they always loved to explore.
A picnic in the garden.
An afternoon curled up on the sofa.
A drive with the windows down.
Their favourite treats for dinner.
Or simply spending uninterrupted time together.
A little paddling pool on a summer’s day.
Giving them something they always want, but most of the time, it’s best they don’t have it.
Your pet won't know they're completing a bucket list. They'll simply know they're spending time with the person they love most.
Capture the Little Moments
As pet owners, we often fill our phones with photos of the big adventures, but during this special time, we encourage you to capture the everyday moments too.
Take photographs of the way they sleep.
Record the sound of their bark, purr or rather intrusive snore!
Take a picture of the muddy paws that have walked beside you for years.
These are often the memories that become the most treasured and yes, I am tearing up as I am writing this.
There Is No Right or Wrong Way
Some pets may still feel full of energy and adventure.
Others may simply enjoy sitting in the sunshine beside you.
A bucket list should never feel like something you have to complete. It is simply a gentle reminder to pause, be present and make the most of the time you have together. It’s not really a list at all, it’s just a way to remember to be present if you can.
Being there is more than enough.
